Celebrate love this Valentine’s Day whilst also supporting local businesses. Whether you want to buy a gift or take someone out, here are some ideas of how you can show someone you love them and make the most of your local businesses.

We’ve included some independent businesses in the York area, as that’s where we are based, but these ideas should translate to wherever you are!

Gifts

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Pottery Painting

If you’ve got a family with younger children, a family pottery painting session is lots of (messy) fun! It’ll keep the kids entertained and you can make a gift for your special someone. The staff are experts in helping you to create a gift that’s personal and will be able to show you how children of all ages can contribute whether it’s a baby’s handprint or an older child’s design of their own.  In York try Bish Bash Pot and Rainbows Ceramics.

Local art

Pictures or photography by local artists make lovely gifts for the home whilst simultaneously supporting the local artists. Explore local galleries and look out for independent shops selling arts and crafts.

Independent Book Shops

Book shops are a great source for meaningful gifts, from poetry to travel guides – whatever your loved one is passionate about you’re bound to find something for them here. Support local book shops where possible!

Jewellery

Local jewellery artists would welcome your business! Some might create bespoke pieces for you, so if you don’t first see exactly what you want, talk to the maker about designing something together or personalising an existing design.

Chocolates and Flowers

You can’t go wrong with the traditional chocolates and flowers! But make sure you shop locally where possible. Florists will be busy, so get your order in early. Keep an eye out for chocolates made locally, in York you can buy handmade artisan chocolates (some vegan) from Tempt, York Cocoa House, and Monk Bar Chocolatiers.

Experiences

Live Music, Comedy

Spend some quality time together at a live entertainment show. Whether it’s giggles or beats you’re after, check out your local venues to see what’s on. If you don’t see the perfect event, the venue may well also sell gift cards.

Restaurants, Bars

Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to try an independent restaurant or bar. If leaving the house is difficult, many independent restaurants now offer a delivery service, so check their websites or social media profiles for information.

Cafes

If going out in the evening is easier said than done, how about trying a café in the daytime? If you’d rather stay in, some cafes now offer a postal order service so you can get a box of your favourite brownies or doughnuts delivered direct to you!

Hotels

Be a tourist in your own town or visit somewhere new. Stay in an independent hotel or B&B to support a local business AND get the best advice on what to see and do locally!

Health & Wellbeing

Classes

Consider signing up for a class of something together, such as dancing, or perhaps individually for something like yoga or pilates. Look into local instructors or venues and see what tickles your fancy!

Beauty & Treatments

If your loved one is ready for a rest and a treat, how about vouchers for a local, independent beauty salon?

However you end up celebrating Valentine’s Day, we hope it’s a good one!
